MOWING TIPS
Using the following advice will definitely give you a healthier lawn with a stronger root system. Every time you mow, you subject your grass to stress, so the following is important.
1. Alternate mowing directions, this stops ruts from forming and changes cutting angles.
2. You should not cut grass down by more than a third of its length at a time, different grass sorts have different optimal lengths. This means you have to mow very regularly in peak growing seasons. Time consuming... but the results will speak for themselves.
3. Mowing at cooler times of the day subjects your grass to less stress, and yourself as well, of course!
4. Grass should be dry when you mow, cutting wet grass could lead to the introduction of disease.
WATERING CORRECTLY
Here are some tips to keep your grass greener and better looking all year round.
1. Water in the morning, afternoon irrigation promotes disease in summer, and frost damage in winter.
2. Water long enough (20-25mm) so that the moisture penetrates to the roots, this promotes root growth, and strong roots = strong, healthy lawn. Do this once a week, or more if you have sandy or very fast draining soil.
3. There is a role for superficial watering:
a. In winter, early in the morning to wash off frost, 3 minutes of water, 15 minutes before dawn, and again 15 minutes after sunrise ( If you need your sleep, just set the timer on your irrigation system... Or if you need your sleep, install one ! )
b. In summer, your grass appreciates a sprinkling to cool it down during the hottest part of the day, this helps avoid roots getting overheated and weak.
